Что (кто) такое existential problem - определение

FORM OF LOGIC
Problem of existential import; Inclusive logic

The knapsack problem is a problem in combinatorial optimization: Given a set of items, each with a weight and a value, determine the number of each item to include in a collection so that the total weight is less than or equal to a given limit and the total value is as large as possible. It derives its name from the problem faced by someone who is constrained by a fixed-size knapsack and must fill it with the most valuable items.

<application, mathematics> Given a set of items, each with a cost and a value, determine the number of each item to include in a collection so that the total cost is less than some given cost and the total value is as large as possible. The 0/1 knapsack problem restricts the number of each items to zero or one. Such constraint satisfaction problems are often solved using dynamic programming. The general knapsack problem is NP-hard, and this has led to attempts to use it as the basis for public-key encryption systems. Several such attempts failed because the knapsack problems they produced were in fact solvable by polynomial-time algorithms. [Are there any trusted knapsack-based public-key cryptosystems?]. Free logic

A free logic is a logic with fewer existential presuppositions than classical logic. Free logics may allow for terms that do not denote any object. Free logics may also allow models that have an empty domain. A free logic with the latter property is an inclusive logic.

Примеры употребления для existential problem
1. Bush: If they leave the coalition, they will prove that Olmert has an existential problem with his government; if they stay – it is the negotiations with the Palestinians that have an existential problem.
2. In doing so, they believe, they have solved a nagging existential problem.
3. If the Jews around the world do not concentrate on resolving their existential problem – preventing their demographic demise – there will be no Jews to work toward tikkun olam, not even according to the original interpretation offered by Gitlin.
4. So even if we assume that Olmert, the old fox, is playing a cynical game, in the end what he is saying is being etched in the public mind as an existential problem that cannot be solved by being swept under the rug.
